Surinder Sahni aka Soori (Shahrukh Khan) is an introvert, responsible, sincere, realist man working as a govt employee in a company named Punjab Power. Taani (Anushka Sharma) is an extrovert, flamboyant, fun-loving, vivacious, dreamer young girl set to get married to the guy she loves. Unforeseen circumstances make Surinder and Taani to get married. They lead a fun-less, routine life due to the huge differences of age and nature between them.
Taani goes to learn dancing and then wants to participate in its dance competition, a reality show called "Dancing Jodi". Surinder wants to make his wife happy so he allows her to to join that. He then,with the help of his childhood friend Bobby, metamorphoses into an alternate persona, named Raj who is a quick witted, outspoken, smart, dashing, fun loving person who fortunately becomes Taani's partner in the competition.
Taani, not able to recognize that Raj is same whom she has got married, eventually starts to feel that Raj's personality and nature are more in tune with what she is comfortable with. Raj expresses his loves for Taani and then they plan to elope from Amritsar on the night of the dancing competition. Surinder doesn't tell the truth to Taani because he wanted to found out to whom Taani is in real love with. Till last he he doesn't broke up. In the morning of dancing competition, Tanni realizes that Surinder is her actual love. And she deny Raj for floating away of Amritsar. And at last Sukrirnder presents his reality behind her. And the story ends merely.
There is some speculation that the character of Surinder Sahni is based on Ramchand, the protagonist of the novel 'The Sari Shop' by Rupa Bajwa, complete to the shaving off of his mustache.
